The Chris Bono era started out in style.
The No. 19 University of Wisconsin wrestling team posted six victories, including a 2-0 decision for redshirt freshman heavyweight Trent Hillger in his debut, en route to a 25-12 non-conference dual victory over the University of Buffalo on Thursday night at UW Field House.
The victory was the first for Bono, who was hired in March to replace longtime coach Barry Davis.
The Badgers opened with a pin by sophomore newcomer Connor Brown. Along the way, UW also got wins from junior redshirt Cole Martin (149 pounds), redshirt sophomore Evan Wick (165), redshirt senior Ryan Christensen (174), redshirt junior Mason Reinhardt (184) and wrapped it up with Hillger’s victory.
“What a great night,” Bono said. “The crowd really showed up, and I think it was an entertaining match, and I’m excited for our guys. It’s been a long seven months, and I think that they performed really well. I love these guys, they fight hard, and by March we’re going to be a really strong team.”
