Onalaska, WI – When it came time to make a college decision, Luther senior David Vannucchi knew exactly where he was going to continue his running career.
“It has been a clear choice for me for the past several years. I fell in love with Madison since the moment I stepped on campus. Once this year is over, that is going to be the most exciting thing for me,” Vannucchi said.
On Wednesday, Vannucchi signed a national letter of intent to run cross country and track at the University of Wisconsin.
“That’s been a goal for me when I started running was to be a part of that group. It’s going to push me a lot I want to be a guy who contributes to the team,” Vannucchi said.
The Luther standout is joining the Badgers after finishing a successful high school cross country career, becoming just the 8th Wisconsin runner to win 3 state titles.
“It’s been cool coming along. Each state title was so much different. I was thankful that was able to line up each year.,” Vannucchi said.
Going to his dream school now a reality, Vannucchi isn’t ready to look ahead to Wisconsin just yet.
“Something that I’ve had to put on the back burner right now. Thinking about that it is so easy to lose focus on what I am trying to do now,” Vannucchi said.
Vannucchi will be one of 40 runners competing at the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships in San Diego on December 8th.
“As a freshman asking if I would qualify for Foot Locker, I’d think that was crazy. But it’s all about baby steps. I’d be at big meets in the past and there would be someone who had done well at Foot Locker and they are the top guys. Thinking that I’ve got to that level now is something that is really cool,” Vannucchi said.
Vannucchi plans to use the experience as a nice tune up for the spring season and what he’ll see at the next level.
“I love pushing myself to be better. That’s what every race is about for me. Lots of life lessons learned out there, so i’m excited for that,” Vannucchi said.
Winona Cotter sophomore Grace Ping will compete in the girls race at the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships.
