The University of Wisconsin football team has represented the Big Ten West Division (or the Leaders Division, if you will) five out of eight times since the dawn of the Big Ten championship-game format, so you can forgive someone for just assuming the Badgers would be there again.
It must have seemed natural when West champion Northwestern scored its first touchdown Saturday night that play-by-play announcer Gus Johnson call it as “Touchdown Wisconsin, excuse me, Northwestern.”
That was the Wildcats’ John Moten IV running it in from 77 yards out to tie the score, although Ohio State would eventually win, 45-24. Ohio State has now won three of these title games, and the first one over a team other than Wisconsin.
Johnson was part of the Milwaukee Bucks broadcast team the last two seasons (though he’s not this year), so hey, perhaps this is just a demonstration of his affinity for Badger State athletics.
The Fox Sports tweet of the highlight edited out the snafu.
