Former Wisconsin Badgers player awarded Big Ten humanitarian award

MADISON, Wis. – Jake Wood, the co-founder and CEO of Team Rubicon and a former Wisconsin Badgers football player, was awarded the 2018 Big Ten Dungy-Thompson Humanitarian Award, officials announced Wednesday.

A release said Wood received the award for his work helping military veterans through Team Rubicon.

Wood received a double major in political science and real estate at the University of Wisconsin–Madison while playing as an offensive lineman from 2001 to 2004. Once he graduated, he joined the Marine Corps and spent four years completing tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Team Rubicon, which Wood co-created in 2010, responds to disasters around the world, like earthquakes, floods, fires and tornadoes. According to a post written by Wood, Team Rubicon deploys 90,000 U.S. veterans as volunteers and has helped during more than 300 global emergencies.

Team Rubicon “pairs the skills and experiences of military veterans with first responders, medical professionals and technology solutions,” the release said.

Wood was also the recipient of the 2018 Pat Tillman Award for Service, created to honor former NFL player and U.S. Army Ranger, Pat Tillman.
