Junior guard Carsen Edwards exploded last season, averaging 18.5 points to rank third in the Big Ten in that category. Edwards had a 40-point outburst in a win at Illinois and finished with 30 in the loss to Texas Tech. “He’s kind of been our point guard in transition (in the past); now, he’ll have more responsibilities there,” Painter said of Edwards, the preseason player of the year in the Big Ten. “But I never want to take away from his ability to score, because I think that’s a threat we can have 40 minutes every single night.”
SCOUTING REPORT
Edwards is the only returning starter for Purdue, which has to replace a group of four seniors — Isaac Haas, Vince Edwards, Dakota Mathias and P.J. Thompson — who combined to average 48.8 points in 2017-18. … One player who should complement Carsen Edwards is junior forward Evan Boudreaux, a graduate transfer who averaged 17.6 points and 9.5 rebounds over two seasons at Dartmouth. … Guard Ryan Cline has spent his first three seasons coming off the bench but should move into the starting lineup as a senior. Cline, a long-range specialist, averaged 4.0 points last season. … Sophomore guard Nigel Eastern also will have an expanded role this season. The 6-foot-6 Eastern, who is athletic and can guard multiple positions, averaged 2.9 points in 37 games as a freshman.

COACH’S CORNER
The Terrapins are 157-81 in seven seasons under Mark Turgeon. They went 19-13 last season, including 8-10 in the Big Ten and missed the postseason for the first time since 2014. Maryland’s roster this season includes only two upperclassmen on scholarship: senior forward Ivan Bender and junior point guard Anthony Cowan. “We might be the youngest team I’ve ever had,” Turgeon said. “But we’re talented, fun to coach, they’re working hard. We’re excited for the year. Should be a really a fun team to watch because of their skill set and their length, their ability to play together.”
BIG MAN ON CAMPUS
Cowan led the Terrapins with 15.8 points and 5.1 assists per game. He led the Big Ten in minutes per game at 37.0. Cowan reached double figures in all but two games as a sophomore and scored at least 20 points seven times.

Two other Maryland recruits — guards Aaron Wiggins and Eric Ayala — landed on ESPN’s Top 100 list. … Freshman guard Serrel Smith Jr. and UW freshman guard Tai Strickland were teammates at St. Petersburg High School in Florida.

BIG MAN ON CAMPUS
Junior guard Charles Matthews, who began his career at Kentucky, averaged 13.0 points and 5.5 rebounds per game in his first season with the Wolverines. Matthews flirted with leaving for the NBA but has to improve his shooting to have a chance to play at the next level. He shot 31.8 percent from 3-point range and 55.8 percent from the free throw line.
SCOUTING REPORT
Michigan has some big holes to fill, starting with forward Moritz Wagner, who left for the NBA after averaging 14.6 points and 7.1 rebounds as a junior. … Junior point guard Zavier Simpson started 29 games last season, averaging 7.3 points and 3.7 assists per game. Simpson, like Matthews, needs work on his shot after making only 28.6 percent of his 3s and 51.6 percent of his free throw attempts. … Sophomore guard Jordan Poole, a Milwaukee native, averaged 6.0 points last season. Poole’s 3-pointer at the buzzer sent Michigan to the Sweet 16 with a 64-63 victory over Houston. … Michigan’s freshman class includes two top-100 recruits — forward Brandon Johnson Jr. and point guard David DeJulius. … The Wolverines were No. 3 nationally in KenPom’s adjusted defensive efficiency ratings last season. “I think we have a chance to be a good defensive team again, but I think offensively we’re a work in progress,” Beilein said.

NEBRASKA
Nebraska guard James Palmer Jr. averaged a team-high 17.2 points per game in his first season with the Cornhuskers.
JAN. 29 | PINNACLE BANK ARENA IN LINCOLN, NEBRASKA
COACH’S CORNER
Tim Miles is 97-97 in six seasons with the Cornhuskers. Nebraska finished 13-5 in the Big Ten and 22-11 overall last season, matching the second-highest win total in program history, but it wasn’t enough to get the Huskers in the NCAA tournament. Miles’ team didn’t exactly make a strong case for itself by dropping a 66-59 decision to Mississippi State in the opening round of the NIT. Still, expectations are soaring in Lincoln because Nebraska returns its top four scorers from 2017-18.
BIG MAN ON CAMPUS
Senior guard James Palmer Jr. averaged a team-high 17.2 points per game in his first season at Nebraska. Palmer, who began his career at Miami (Fla.), reached double figures in all but two games and exploded for 34 points in a loss at Ohio State. “One of the smartest players on the floor that I’ve coached in a long, long time,” Miles said. “He knows everything that’s going on, knows where everybody is supposed to be. You can tell him something on a counter and in a (short) amount of time, he picks it up, executes it just like you’ve been practicing it all week.”
SCOUTING REPORT
The last time Nebraska began a season with this much hype was in 2014-15 after it went 11-7 in the Big Ten and qualified for the NCAA tournament the previous year. That didn’t turn out well for the Huskers, who followed up their breakthrough campaign with 13-18 overall and 5-13 in conference play. … Center Jordy Tshimanga, who averaged 4.6 rebounds in 13.6 minutes per game last season, left the program in June and transferred to Dayton. … In addition to Palmer, Nebraska returns two other double-digit scorers — senior forward Isaac Copeland (12.9 ppg, 6.1 rpg) and senior point guard Glynn Watson (10.5 ppg) — as well as versatile junior forward Isaiah Roby (8.7 ppg, 6.3 rpg).

COACH’S CORNER
Brad Underwood had a rocky debut season at Illinois, which went 14-18 overall and 4-14 in the Big Ten in 2017-18. Underwood had reached the NCAA tournament in his first four seasons as a head coach — three at Stephen F. Austin, one at Oklahoma State — but he inherited the mess left by John Groce in Champaign.
BIG MAN ON CAMPUS
Sophomore guard Trent Frazier averaged 12.5 points last season. Frazier went 7 of 11 from 3-point range and finished with a career-high 32 points in a 78-69 home loss to UW. “I think one of the hardest challenges is you have a freshman that has a lot of success, and you’re always curious as to how they’ll react to that,” Underwood said. “The one thing that Trent has done is accepted some of the things that he didn’t do well. He’s allowed us to coach him.”
SCOUTING REPORT
Point guard Te’Jon Lucas was one of four rotation players to leave the program with eligibility remaining. Lucas returned to his hometown and will sit out this season at UW-Milwaukee. Meanwhile, Leron Black left to pursue a professional career. Black led the Illini with 15.3 points and 5.2 rebounds per game last season. … The Illini’s roster includes eight newcomers. Graduate transfer Adonis De La Rosa, a 7-foot center, averaged 11.8 points and 7.6 rebounds at Kent State last season. … Illinois’ backcourt will be young but should be exciting with Frazier joined by true freshman Ayo Dosunmu, a Chicago native who is ranked No. 36 in the 2018 recruiting class by ESPN. … The Illini need part-time starters Kipper Nichols (10.0) and Aaron Jordan (7.9) to take on bigger roles.

Law averaged 12.0 points and 5.8 rebounds last season. … The Wildcats have two big pieces to replace in the backcourt: Bryant McIntosh and Scottie Lindsey, who combined to start 203 games at Northwestern. “Certainly we’re going to miss what McIntosh and Lindsey brought in the backcourt,” Collins said. “But with the pieces we added, the ability to have more guys that can put the ball in the basket will help some of those offensive woes we went through at times last year.” One player who should help fill the scoring void is senior guard Ryan Taylor, a graduate transfer from Evansville. Taylor led the Missouri Valley Conference with 21.3 points per game last season. Another transfer who should help immediately is junior forward A.J. Turner, who made 52 starts in two seasons at Boston College. … Northwestern’s most decorated recruiting class ever is led by forward Pete Nance. Freshman point guard Ryan Greer also will be counted on early at a position of need.
THE NUMBER

Winston also opened eyes by leading the conference by making 49.7 percent of his 3-point attempts. He made at least four 3-pointers six times as a sophomore. “I think Cassius does have a chance to be one of the better players in this league because his skill level, because of his intelligence, and because he’s now got experience,” Izzo said.

FEB. 26 | ASSEMBLY HALL IN BLOOMINGTON, INDIANA
COACH’S CORNER
The Hoosiers went 16-15 overall and 9-9 in Big Ten play in their first season under Archie Miller, who has created a buzz in Bloomington after replacing Tom Crean. Miller’s first full recruiting cycle resulted in Indiana signing a pair of top-100 recruits.

Senior forward Juwan Morgan led the Hoosiers with 16.5 points, 7.4 rebounds, 1.4 blocks and 1.2 steals per game last season. Morgan had eight double-doubles, including a 34-point, 11-rebound performance in an overtime win over Notre Dame.
SCOUTING REPORT
Robert Johnson had a strong senior season at Indiana, averaging 14.0 points per game, but the Hoosiers have a ready replacement in freshman Romeo Langford. Landing Langford, ranked No. 5 in the 2018 recruiting class by ESPN, was a huge coup for Miller. “There’s a lot of hype around him,” Miller said. “Obviously being from the state, going to IU, I think that’s going to make it a bigger story than everything. He’s always had a lot of eyes on him. Always been a calm type of guy under pressure. He’s shown that. I think the thing that’s been really enjoyable so far about Romeo is he’s just like one of the other guys. He’s embraced his teammates.” Indiana also pulled forward Jerome Hunter, ranked No. 67 by ESPN, out of Ohio. … Junior center De’Ron Davis, who averaged 9.6 points in 15 starts before his season ended in January with an Achilles’ tear, should be ready for the start of the season. … Forward Justin Smith showed promise — and athleticism — while averaging 6.5 points as a true freshman last season. … Indiana needs more consistency from junior point guard Devonte Green, who averaged a turnover every 11.8 minutes in 2017-18.

SCOUTING REPORT
Ohio State has plenty of production to replace after the departure of forward Keita Bates-Diop, who was named Big Ten Player of the Year and led the Buckeyes with 19.8 points and 8.7 rebounds per game. Jae’Sean Tate (12.3 ppg, 6.2 rpg) didn’t post the numbers that Bates-Diop did, but he was a four-year fixture in the lineup and his energy will be difficult to replace. … Center Kaleb Wesson started 30 games as a true freshman, averaging 10.2 points and 4.9 rebounds per game. … Holtmann bolstered his roster with the addition of Keyshawn Woods, a graduate transfer from Wake Forest who averaged 11.9 points last season.
