College football early signing day wrap-up: What’s next for Notre Dame, Northwestern and Illinois?

The early national signing period for college football began Wednesday and ends Friday. Here’s a recap of the classes Notre Dame, Northwestern, Illinois and Northern Illinois signed Wednesday. After Friday, high school recruits can’t sign national letters of intent until Feb. 6.

Notre Dame

Early signees: 21.

Class rank: 13th nationally.

Hidden gems: The signing of Seth Coleman, a three-star defensive end from Melbourne, Fla., was a relief for the Illini. Utah had made a late and aggressive push for Coleman, who committed to Illinois in July. … The Illini were also able to hold off a late charge from Texas Tech for Kyron Cumby, a 5-8, 175-pound running back from Plano, Texas. … Griffin Moore (6-4, 225 pounds) played quarterback at Bloomington, Ill., and showed tons of athleticism for a player of his size. Illinois recruited him as a tight end.
